Samsung’s 292 inch TV ‘The Wall’ Seen at CES 2020

Samsung may have become the biggest TV maker with their 292 inch TV, The Wall. With the use of microLED display technology Samsung is able to achieve gigantic screen dimensions and high resolutions. The Wall was showcased at CES 2020 along with a smaller 150-inch version with 8k resolution. This was a fair upgrade from the CES 2019 which showcased 75-inch and 4k resolution.

Major Benefits of MicroLED

Millions of LED make up the MicroLED technology. Through the use of MicroLED, Samsung is able to provide a better pure black and true color experience which gives it the potential capabilities of replacing LCD and OLED displays. Some of the benefits MicroLED has over LCD and OLED displays are as follows:

  • Luminance efficiency is greater giving it a higher light emission per said power consumption.
  • “Real” LED allowing wider viewing angles, reduced motion blur, no backlight for a true black experience, and less susceptible to burn-in which gives much longer lifespan.
  • Easier to scale the size of the display due to modularity.
  • Ability to achieve high resolutions with larger display sizes.

Major Challenges

Though the concept of MicroLED seems simple enough, it’s actually a difficult concept to implement. Since the size of the LED in MicroLED’s is significantly smaller, the amount of light emitted is diminished. In order to use MicroLED effectively , it may require higher power consumption, or higher usage efficiency. This produces a lot more heat dissipation challenges. Another great challenge in MicroLED is taking into account the gap between pixels, also known as the pitch size. With today’s limitations on reducing the size of circuitry and other electrical components, reducing the pitch size is more difficult than it may initially seem. This challenge limits the reducible size of the MicroLED and ultimately does not allow the ability to obtain higher screen resolutions for these big screen sizes.

As of now, Samsung has announced that they have been able to achieve additional fixed sizes of 88-, 93-, 110- and 150-inches. Although this new tech has begun selling commercially, it is still extremely expensive and has not reached “ideal” price ranges.
